I've just been told that feeding my dog while I eat is wrong.

Dog food of course, the only thing he eats other than his special poodle food is edamame and grapes. Oppo dog owners want to weight in?

They told me I should always keep his bowl full because the dog has different eating habits and it isn't healthy for me a (human) to decided whether he is hungry or not.

Accute Renal failure. My wife's a vet tech and they get in at least one a week. Raisins too. Toxicity is different in different breeds but it's deadly to all of them in a large enough dose.

The most important thing in dog psychology is that your dog recognize that you are the alpha. Alpha dogs don't live as long as subservient dogs, because being alpha is stressful. The alpha has to keep his (or her) position because it's good for wild packs to have a leader, but in your home, the dog doesn't need to be the leader. The domesticated dog will still have the inborn tendency to try to be leader or else look for the one who is in charge. When the dog sees that someone else is in charge, they can relax; "Oh, Alpha's got this." The easiest and most routine way to establish that you are the Alpha is to eat first. When your dog sees you eating first, they see that you brought down the antelope, or the turkey, or the peanut butter beast, or the kibblemonster, and that they don't need to worry about feeding the pack.

I don't really see an issue with that. I generally feed our dog around 7am and then again at 6pm, but she almost always waits for us to eat and then east her food when we're done with ours.

That's idiotic. Most dogs are capable of overeating and getting lardass fat, or even very likely to do so - they're not magically better at deciding how much they can eat healthily than humans are.

Yes - it's a behavioral training tactic. It can be especially helpful if you're struggling to establish yourself as the "alpha" of the pack.

The alpha of the pack eats before the rest of the pack. So you want to eat before your dog eats.

Kinja'd!!! My citroen won't start > Sn210

I won't! But the weird thing is that he loves grapes more than anything, he only eats them when I do and only if they are peeled.

Kinja'd!!! Kevin Barrett > My citroen won't start

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh yeah, that's bad. Do you ever find yourself throwing out old food that the dog won't eat? Dog food that sits out goes stale, just like yours and mine. Free-feeding not only wasted food, but contributes to a obesity. Worst of all, your dog needs to eat in order, because food and order and position are very important to dogs...they eat after you eat so that they always understand you're the alpha.

Kinja'd!!! jariten1781 > My citroen won't start
03/17/2015 at 15:17

Kinja'd!!!0

Yup, they're bad news. Lots of dogs love them though which is why they see so many cases.

Next time he's in for a checkup make sure they check the kidney values. Should be ok, but if they've attrophied due to grape poisoning you'll want to switch to a low protein diet.

- Feed your dog anytime in the morning that works for you, but not 15 minutes before or after exercising.

- Feed your dog dinner whenever suits you (I feed my dog at 6:30 and before I eat usually) but again the 15 minute rule. Feeding before you eat can keep the dog from drooling over and wanting your dinner if the dog is hungry, but meh. I think it's more mean to make a helpless animal watch you eat when it's hungry.

- Grapes are not suggested and supposedly can lead to liver / kidney problems but I don't see this as total substantiated.

- BEST TREATS = carrots and oranges

- Don't buy any food or crap from China

lol dogs are so weird. I have to get my dog special food, grind it up, mix it with enzymes and water, let it incubate for 20 minutes, and then I can feed it to her. She's got a rare pancreatic disease called EPI. I can't leave my dog's food out obviously because I have to prepare it first, so I don't think you're doing anything wrong by scheduled meals. All dogs are different.

If my dog is lucky, I share the spicy peanut beast or the full grown pork rind bag with him after I've had some.

Kinja'd!!! MIATAAAA > My citroen won't start

That... is stupid. lol

But yes, feeding after you eat and only keeping the bowl down while your dog eats establishes you as pack leader and can help with some behavioral issues.

We've only had our dog for a week but I'm already starting to sympathize with my parent friends over all the unsolicited advice/concern trolling and mommy/daddy wars involved in dog/childrearing nowadays.

If your vet says he's fine and you don't think he's eating fast enough to worry about bloat, don't worry about the armchair doctors. Personally we give ours half in the morning, half at night (though he won't eat until we're done), and he has one of those huge self-filling water jugs.

Kinja'd!!!1

This is pretty on point but is really only a concern for strong-willed dogs who are unclear of who the alpha is. If your dog already sees you as the unquestionable alpha, I really don't see any harm in feeding him at your dinner time. Personally, I've found making a dog follow a routine before being fed (ie. go to a particular spot, sit, hold eye contact, get food) and doing your best to feed him at set times (this aids in bathroom requirements) to be more important in a well behaved dog...

It's supposed to be a dominance thing - everyone in my house eats before the dog - cat included. She (the dog) is the newest - learn your place. I love you but you are the bottom rung. Mom and dad are the bosses.

Also skip grapes - frozen blueberries though... my dog loses her mind for them.

For what it's worth, my two current dogs always have full food bowls so they can eat when they feel like it. It works really well, and they maintain a healthy weight.

I have, on the other hand, had many dogs that wouldn't stop eating as long as their was food in the bowl. That led to some exciting side-effects ranging from weight problems to literally eating so much they would poop out basically undigested food because it passed through them so quickly from the force of food piling up.

YMMV

Kinja'd!!! Sejji > My citroen won't start

Yeah, who told you that? We feed our dog based on the weight recommendations on the back of the food package. So she gets 2 cups a day as a 40 lb dog.

If we left out a full bowl of food she'd weight 100 lbs. I swear, she eats everything in sight. I let her eat till she stopped as a puppy, and ate 4 cups for dinner as a 6 month old that weighed 15 lbs at the time.

Interesting. Our dog will get fed before or even after us just depending on when our food is ready and how hungry we are. I never saw it as a big issue. It's funny that my wife does most of the behavioral training, but the dog still sees me as the alpha. When I give a command she's really good about listening and knows I'm not messing around.

I don't know all the science behind it but I know that grapes and raisins have the potential to cause kidney failure in some dogs. Not all dogs are affected and some dogs need high amounts to be poisoned but I wouldn't risk it. Also avocados and their seeds are also considered to be toxic.

This is nonsense though, my dog eats breakfast and dinner that's it. If I put any food in his bowl he will eat it even if he just finished eating. He has a bottomless stomach and a never ending appetite!!

like others have said, that is horse shit. Dogs love schedules/rituals. Keep doing what you are doing minus the grapes and you'll have a happy dog. Some are capable of self regulating their eating and others cannot. My dog gets fed in the morning and the evening but won't eat unless I'm around to watch her or tell her that she needs to eat. She's a needy weirdo bitch.

As I'm sure you've heard, grapes are bad for dogs. If your dog is dumb like mine, you can try tossing him cherry tomatoes (mine will usually scarf them down before he realizes they aren't grapes, otherwise if he manages to chew he'll spit them out), and many dogs like crunchy carrots. Salty/crunchy things like crackers, and kongs filled with peanut butter are also popular choices.

Kinja'd!!! Maddawg > My citroen won't start

Feeding your dog after you eat is a good idea, it asserts your dominance, reinforcing the dog's obedience and loyalty, in a pack setting, the alphas eat first then the betas are allowed to eat after. Dogs are pack animals with a pack mentality, eating first and feeding your dog after simulates this.

We also don't allow our dog in the same room while a human is eating, she can be at the doorway, but if she's in a room while you're eating all you have to do is give her a knowing look and she'll slink out of the room. Not allowing her in the room is more of a personal preference than a dominance thing, she was a rescue so was a constant beggar, this prevents her from annoying us for scraps while we eat.
